An FDE is a production engineer who is pointed at a customer instead of a codebase.
Palantir invented the modern version and calls it Delta. Their framing is the clearest one going: a conventional developer builds one capability for many customers. A forward deployed engineer builds many capabilities for one customer or mission.
The AI era changed what that means. Model behaviour is probabilistic, so somebody has to build evaluations and guardrails. Enterprise value lives in proprietary data, so somebody has to do the integration. And deployments now surface product gaps faster than any roadmap can anticipate them — so somebody has to carry that signal home.
That somebody is the FDE. Which is also why the title is being abused: it has become an attractive label to staple onto implementation work. Module 02 teaches you to tell the difference.
The eight tests
A role has to satisfy most of these to count as a substantive FDE position. You'll score a real job against them in Module 01.
